All about wire corn cribs

Wire corn cribs are a unique way of storing grain and feeds. Making wire corn cribs can be done inexpensively and quickly. You will need some 4x4 inch posts and some wire mesh. A wide roof over the top will shed rain and protect your feed or grain.

The height and length of your wire corn cribs is up to your discretion and depends upon your needs. Once you have decided how large you want your wire corn cribs, you can begin construction. Your crib should be about two feet above the ground to ensure good air circulation, and because of the open sides of the wire corn cribs grain dries quickly and without spoilage.

Wire corn cribs have been used for decades as a convenient way to dry and store corn. They range in size from five feet square to one that holds more than two-thousand bushels of grain. Wire corn cribs this large can be found for sale at numerous farm auctions.

Wire corn cribs are thought to be especially suited for drying and storing corn. Fresh-picked corn needs to be cured, and a long narrow wire corn crib will ensure that the corn cures correctly. Because they are composed of wire there is excellent ventilation, and it's the ventilation that cures the corn.

The width of wire corn cribs is of utmost importance. If it is too wide the corn will not be ventilated correctly, and curing will not occur. Also if the corn contains a moisture content of more than 20% wire corn cribs are not recommended. Instead mechanical drying of the corn should take place.
