Baby Cots and safety

Baby Cots

The baby cots must reunite two requirements: be safe and comfortable. The children spend in the cot a great part of their time during the first two or three years of their life. For that reason, the baby cot must be carefully choose.

In the baby's room the cot mustn't be located near a window or a draught, neither near a radiator or heating device to avoid the excess of heat.

Appropriate measurements of the Babys Cots: It must be a minimum depth of 60 cms, measured from the superior edge to under side of the mattress. When the lateral moving part of the cot is lowered, its height from the mattress should be around the 20 cms. Between the bars, the distance should be less than 6.5 cms, therefore the baby will not be able to fit a part of his body through the bars of the cot.

The baby cot can be made of wood or metal, but it must not have any sign of deterioration. If it is made of wood, observe for mark of insects bites. The metallic zones will be made of anti corrosive material and the varnishes and paintings must be nontoxic.

It is preferable that the finished lines are smooth and cleared: the sharpened borders or edges can damage the baby.

Wheels: Some cots have two wheels and some other ones have four wheels. If the cot has two wheels it will also have two fixed feet. If it has four wheels, we must make sure that two of them have a system of brake and that always are blocked.

The mattress: the base must be rigid, smooth and resistant to avoid deformations in the spine of the baby. The mattress can be made of wool, sponge or wharves, but always firm and breathing free materials. Its thickness will oscillate between 8 and 15 cms. It must fit perfectly in the cot so the baby does not find spaces free where he can put the feet and hands: between the mattress and the lateral sides you should not fit more than two fingers.
