Recalled Cribs

Occasionally, despite the best efforts of manufacturers to produce high quality, safe products, malfunctions or unforeseen events may cause them to recall said items. Such was the case with bassett and cribs in 1978. According to published reports at the time, Bassett Furniture Industries and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission requested the recall of 6,000 cribs that contained bamboo-like motifs. The motifs apparently were at risk for trapping or strangling infants who stood in their cribs. The cribs, titled "Mandalay" were produced between February 1974 and October 1976. Basset and crib manufacturing has apparently since recovered, and the furniture empire is doing quite well today.

More recently, another company that was forced to recall their cribs was Vermont Precision Woodworks. Their announcement came out on April 25, 2002, for similar reasons: The slats on the cribs could detach and fall, revealing open space just large enough to entrap a child or baby's head, causing them severe injury or even death. At the time of the announcement, Vermont Precision Woodworks had received calls regarding twenty one instances of such events. When buying your baby's crib, it's always a smart idea to consider the size of the slats, as well as how far apart they are spaced from each other. Also think twice before you purchase a crib bumper pad, as those have been known to also cause suffocation in babies. They are supposed to prevent your infant from injuring him or herself, but sometimes they cause more harm than good. Do research and speak with friends who have already raised infants to decide for yourself what is right for your family.
