Finding a world of wonder in children's nursery rhymes and songs

Although many children's nursery rhymes and songs have a long history of traditional meanings, often political, they also can provide your child with a whole new world to explore and enjoy.

Prior to the invention of the printing press, many of the children's nursery rhymes and songs were originally teaching songs because access to books and other teaching materials was severely limited because they were hand-printed. Thus counting songs like "One, two, pick up sticks," helped children learn to count, and it is still used for this purpose today.

Other children's nursery rhymes and songs conveyed stories about people and events that occurred in their lifetimes. For example, Humpty Dumpty is supposed to have been composed about King Richard III, and Ring-Around-the-Rosy, is a tale about the plague that devastated the United Kingdom. Baa-baa-Black Sheep was supposedly written as a tax protest song, and even Mother Goose, herself, was supposedly written about a witch during the great witchhunts in the 17th century.

Putting aside their varied histories, children's nursery rhymes and songs are a great way to introduce your child to the world of books and the wonders found in them. Because they are simple and because they rhyme they are easily remembered making them great teaching tools, i.e. the counting songs.

Children's nursery rhymes and songs also make great themes for decorating your nursery. Mother Goose, and her assorted characters can be colorfully displayed on a wall mural, and a variety of infant furniture and accessories take advantage of these colorful characters in their designs.
