Are cramps an early sign of pregnancy?

There are many different early signs of pregnancy, the most notable being a missed period. However, cramps can be an early sign of pregnancy. These cramps are caused by the expansion of the uterus and are similar to menstrual cramps. They usually subside as the pregnancy progresses.

In addition to cramps as an early sign of pregnancy, other early signs and symptoms of pregnancy include swollen or tender breasts. This is your body's way of preparing the breast to produce milk for the baby, and this swelling and tenderness can start as early as two weeks after conception.

Fatigue is another early sign of pregnancy. This fatigue is caused primarily by the body's need to pump extra blood to the developing placenta and fetus. It can also be caused by an increase in progesterone levels. Since progesterone is a central nervous system depressant it can cause a pregnant woman to feel tired and sleepy all the time.

Frequent urination is also another early sign of pregnancy. This is caused by the enlarged uterus pushing on the bladder. Morning sickness is also another early sign of pregnancy. Even though it is called morning sickness, it can occur all day or just in the mornings or just in the evenings. Since a pregnant woman's sense of smell is heightened during pregnancy, strong odors can trigger a bout of morning sickness as can certain foods.

Other early signs of pregnancy include headaches, constipation, food cravings and mood swings. Almost all these uncomfortable bodily changes are temporary and usually subside as the pregnancy progresses.
