Who can Operate a Day Nursery?

In places like Ontario, Canada, there are several requirements one must fulfill in order to be allowed to operate a so-called day nursery or day care system. First off, a day nursery is defined as a location that receives at least five children under ten years of age who are not siblings, for a period of less than twenty four hours at a time. The purpose of their reception is temporary care or guidance. If the school or home location can meet these requirements they will eligible for a license. They also must own or borrow the appropriate day nursery supplies, which can include storage for medical supplies, food, toys or other entertainment devices like books and dolls. Other important day care supplies are cleaning utilities for sanitation purposes, bed linens, and outdoor play equipment.

Within each day nursery, regardless of location, there must be space enough to contain a staff rest area, a play area, bathroom(s), an office, an area to prepare food each day, and a sick area to isolate children who are ill from the rest of the kids. This is usually not a big problem because prior to enrollment children must be up to date with their immunizations. Staff members must hold diplomas in early childhood development or similar categories, and nutritious meals must be fed to the children at midday. Other requirements concern child to adult ratios within the daycare that are based upon occupancy as well as the average age of the occupants. Outside, there is a requirement of sixty square feet of space per child.
