Designing activities for preschoolers and toddlers
Activities for preschoolers and toddlers should be simple and easily completed thus giving the child a sense of accomplishment that will, in turn, promote their self-confidence and enhance their self-image.
Fun activities for preschoolers and toddlers should include physical activities as well as craft projects. Physical activities will help promote motor development as well as provide a release for excess energy.
One such activity is scarf dancing. Throw scarves or pieces of material up in the air. Watch them float to the ground. When all the scarves have landed, have the child imitate the moves they made while floating in the air. This can be accompanied by music to enhance sensory development in the child. Other activities with scarves include having you and the child each hold one end and then dancing together.
Another fun activity is done with a jump rope. Lay the rope on the ground and create a shape with it. Have the child try to imitate the shape with his/her body. This activity not only enhances motor development but also the child's visual perception.
Singing children's songs and nursery rhymes to your preschoolers and toddlers can also be a fun physical activity. For example, Ring-Around-the-Rosy can be acted out, as can Farmer in the Dell. In addition, just reading nursery rhymes to your child will provide a foundation for the love of books and reading that will last a lifetime.
Remember, all activities for preschoolers and toddlers should be designed with ease of completion in mind. Children at these ages are easily frustrated, so making sure they will succeed is of the utmost importance.
