Diabetes insipidus and premature birth

How are diabetes insipidus and premature birth related?

First of all diabetes insipidus is different from regular diabetes. The more common type of diabetes is called diabetes mellitus and comes in two types, Type 1 - or juvenile diabetes which is insulin dependent and Type 2 - Adult onset diabetes, which is not insulin dependent. Diabetes insipidius is different from diabetes mellitus in that it affects the kidney's and the amount of urine that is produced and the amount of fluid that is retained by the body. The pituitary gland controls the amounts of fluid the kidneys release and it is this organ that malfunctions in diabetes insipidus.

Diabetes insipidus has several types but the relationship between diabetes insipidus and premature birth occurs in gestational diabetes insipidus. Gestational diabetes insipidus and premature birth are thought to be related, with gestational diabetes inspidus causing both spontaneous abortions, premature births, and low birth weight.

Diabetes insipidus is fairly rare, however it is frequently misdiagnosed as diabetes mellitus since many of the symptoms are quite similar. Diabetes insipidus is completely treatable if diagnosed correctly.

Many obstetricians routinely check their pregnant patients for gestational diabetes. They are testing for diabetes mellitus. Few, however, test for gestational diabetes insipidus. However, since the occurrence of gestational diabetes insipidus is fairly rare, the routine test for diabetes mellitus seems to be sufficient. The treatment for gestational diabetes is usually to prescribe a sugar-free diet, however medication may be prescribed if it is deemed necessary. In both types of gestational diabetes, once the mother has given birth the diseases seem to subside.
