Does my toddler have asthma?
Asthma in toddlers can be a serious condition and one that your doctor will need to diagnose. Asthma in toddlers should be treated as soon as possible and there are several things your doctor will want to know before discussing treatment options.
Your doctor will ask if your child has a cough, wheezes, has shortness of breath or chest tightness. You will be asked if there is a family history of asthma or allergies. Your physician will also need to know what triggers the symptoms. Do the symptoms seem worse when the child exercises, has a cold, or is exposed to allergens like the family cat or dog?
Your doctor may ask you how often your child has these symptoms and how severe they are. If your toddler is in preschool the doctor will probably inquire about your child's attendance. He/she will want to know if your toddler misses preschool because of the asthma.
Another question you may be asked concerns how your toddler sleeps at night. Does he/she have trouble sleeping because of coughing or wheezing? Other helpful information will cover your child's tolerance of colds. If your toddler gets a cold that lodges immediately in his/her chest it can be another sign of asthma.
After your physician has questioned you about these symptoms he/she will be able to determine if your child has asthma and will give you advice. If your toddler does have asthma he/she should be given a written asthma management plan. This plan will help you and your toddler manage his/her asthma.
Your doctor is the best judge of whether your toddler has asthma. He/she will make a diagnosis based on information you provide.
