Setting goals for toddlers

Parenting is never easy, and parenting a toddler can be especially trying. But by setting realistic goals for toddlers some of the worry and anxiety of raising your toddler can be eliminated.

Goals for toddlers fall into several different categories including developmental goals and social goals. Developmental goals are goals that measure the child's physical and mental development. For example, some developmental goals include: speaking a few words, drinking from a cup, helping to dress and undress themselves, walking upstairs without help, and so on. These are relatively simple goals that toddlers can achieve with practice, and being able to achieve goals is vital to the toddler's development of a positive self-image and their overall self-confidence.

Social goals for toddlers include such things as hugging and kissing those they like and being able to identify themselves in a mirror. Sometimes, toddlers will go through a period of shyness, so overcoming this is also a goal the toddler and his parents can try to achieve. A shy toddler should not be forced into making friendly overtures to strangers. This will only frustrate the toddler and make it more difficult for him/her to overcome their shyness.

Art and music also present a set of goals for toddlers. Toddlers should be able to move to the music, sing to themselves simple songs, and enjoy messy art projects such as finger painting.

All of these goals are achievable by toddlers, and each toddler will advance through these goals at their own pace. Never force a toddler to undertake a goal that they are not ready for. This will only frustrate them and undermine their self-esteem.
