Crib Bumper Pads - Safe or Unsafe?

In recent years, several child health organizations have begun speaking out against crib bumper pads. Among these groups are the American Academy of Pediatrics and Health Canada. Their reasons for fearing that bumper pads are unsafe are due mostly to suffocation risk. Bumper pads were originally used to prevent babies from accidentally getting their heads or arms caught in the slats in cribs. But now a days, the slats are placed much closer together, and there is virtually no room for a baby to get stuck between them. Hence the bumper pads, say some health officials, are no longer necessary, and pose a suffocation risk. Still others continue to believe that the pads prevent injury and are still a worthwhile purchase. If neither of these points concern you, or you think the pads are pleasing to the eye, what should you do? Well, oftentimes bumper pads are sold as part of a bedding set, but if you don't like the style or material, you might ask about how to make crib bumper pads yourself. How to make crib bumper pads is discussed and explained on a few notable websites.

One of them suggests getting some soft fabric and fitting or sewing it around some firm foam. Make sure it is secured to the crib with at least six straps, and only use a bumper pad until the baby is tall enough to stand on their own. In general, straps that close with snaps are better, safety wise, than straps that tie. They are less likely to get worked loose by an adventurous baby.
