How to overcome shyness in toddlers
Shyness in toddlers is not an uncommon occurrence although it can be frustrating for parents who are eager to show off their child's winning personality. If your toddler is reluctant to meet new people or clings to you in a crowd, there is hope. Your shy toddler will eventually blossom into a social butterfly given time and the right encouragement.
First of all don't force your shy toddler into making new acquaintances or to speak to strangers. For some toddlers, speaking to a new person is as intimidating as talking in front of an auditorium full of people. Shyness in toddlers will not go away by forcing them to confront their fears. Rather, talk positively about the child in front of them. Encourage them by what you say about them. But don't talk about their shyness. This will only hurt their self-esteem and make them more self-conscious about their shyness.
Start with small words, like, "Hi!" This will make it easier for the toddler to remember what he/she is supposed to say. If the toddler does manage to say hello, make sure you lavish them with praise. However, if they can't manage it, don't reprimand them for their failure.
Joining a small playgroup can also help your toddler overcome shyness. Sometimes showing the child photographs of the people you are going to visit can also help. In addition, the most important thing you can do is to listen when your child talks, and respond back to them. A young child will give up trying to talk if they feel they are being ignored. Taking the time to really listen to your toddler will reward you with a child who is eager and ready to make conversation not only with you but with others as well.
