Lifelong Bonds

No matter if between an adult, teenager, or infant, mother and child bonding is special and unique. Initial bonding begins within the womb. Parents' mindsets must be that their child is not unwanted, as that would equate to unloved and resentment that the baby will pick up on once born. Talking to baby, playing soft music or singing, and laying hands on the belly are all ways to build that bond. Upon delivery, a newborn identifies immediately with the mother and father's voices, after becoming familiar with them in-utero. After delivery and beyond, it is vital to hold, caress, and talk to your child as much as you can. All the interaction, eye contact, and physical contact you can provide will assist a newborn in achieving appropriate developmental milestones, feel a sense of security and self-confidence, and feel needed. Without having these things, a baby cannot cultivate a healthy self-esteem. To a premature infant, mother and child bonding is particularly important for survival and development. Kangarooing-which is, the bare skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby during baby's first year-has been shown to help a preemie grow significantly.

All babies should grow up valuing human life and relationships. Refraining from abuse, neglect, or degradation is essential in raising a child to honor his or her parents and to then do the same in like manner someday. For your infant, mother and child bonding is the one free thing you can provide, even if you have nothing else to offer. There just is no substitute for that bond.
