Handling infant temper tantrums

As your infant grows and develops they gradually gain a sense of who they are and what their wants and needs are. When they feel those wants and needs are not readily met they may express their displeasure by throwing a temper tantrum, and handling those infant temper tantrums appropriately is a skill many parents need to learn.

Handling infant temper tantrums requires patience, persistence, and consistency. First of all, never give in to the toddler's demands when he/she is throwing a temper tantrum. If you give in, this will only reinforce the behavior and make temper tantrums in the future more likely.

Next, try to remain calm. If you loose your temper and/or patience and spank or yell at the toddler this will only serve to make the child angrier thus making the temper tantrum worse. Take a thirty seconds to gather your wits and your patience before trying to deal with the temper tantrum. Once you have yourself together, then you can try one of the following methods of dealing with infant temper tantrums.

First you can try to distract the infant, drawing his/her attention from the object that has caused such frustration. If that doesn't work you can simply ignore the child. However, sometimes this doesn't work. Removing the child from the family until she/he has calmed down sometimes does the trick when ignoring them doesn't. Don't try to talk reason into the child. They are beyond listening at this point. Finally, holding the child may work. Holding the child may also be necessary to prevent him/her from hurting themselves or others. When the child is finally calm, then you can talk to them about their feelings and their behavior.
