Infant Torticolis
Infant torticolis is medical problem that affects many newborns. This condition can be improved with an early diagnosis. The cramped conditions inside the womb can cause muscle damage when a baby is born. This problem is called infant torticolis.
When babies are born with infant torticolis they have neck muscles that are too short and tight. This limits their free head motion.
If this condition is not treated it can worsen over time. The shape of the skull and spine can change and this will put unneeded pressure on the eyes and brain.
The key to improving infant torticolis is an early diagnosis. If you notice your baby is always leaning to one side more than the other and one side of the babies head is flattened, you should contact your pediatrician immediately. This is a sign of torticolis.
It is also a threat to the rest of the baby's body. If this condition is not treated the baby can suffer shoulder and cervical problems that can affect the skeleton. Head tilt can occur as well as visual problems.
This condition begins in the womb before the baby is even born. The problem often continues after the baby is born because of lifestyles. Babies are often placed only on their backs and that restricts the way they turn their heads. Walkers and bouncy seats add to the problem because these items do not help babies strengthen the muscles in their necks and heads.
If your baby is diagnosed with infant torticolis physical therapy can really help. Watch your baby's head and neck and talk to your pediatrician if you have concerns. If physical therapy is recommended be sure to follow through. This condition is completely curable.
