How to Handle Night Terrors in Toddlers

Is your child having nightmares and you don't know how to help him? If this is your situation, do not worry too much. Dreams are normal and are often times frightening, you just need to learn how to handle night terrors in toddlers. Everyone dreams every night, but if your toddler is having many bad dreams you might want to try and figure out the root of the dream. Did
your child watch something scary on television, or did his siblings tell him a scary story? Perhaps your child overheard something you were discussing with your spouse and this scared him. Regardless of the root of the nightmare, learning hot to handle night terrors in toddlers is important for soothing your child. When your child has just had a nightmare, he will
likely wake you up and be wide awake himself. Do not send your child back to bed alone, but rather get up and comfort and soothe him. This will be very important for relaxing the child and helping him realize it was simply a vision from his imagination.

Once you have calmed your child, discuss with him the dream. If something happened during the day or week that was similar
to the dream it is likely you will be able to see the relation and explain it to the child. Once you know why the dream occurred, find out why the child is scared of this particular event, action or person. If it is because of television, change the programming your child watches. If it is because of something else, find out why and then help your child deal. Also, avoiding night terrors in toddlers is possible by making bed time happy by helping your child fall asleep thinking happy thoughts. This is always a good practice.
