On Getting Pregnant

Pinpointing the exact time for ovulation and getting pregnant can be hard to guess unless you track your cycle on a regular basis, becoming familiar with your body and its changes. Typically, right before ovulation, the cervical mucous changes from milky to extremely slippery and egg-white. Ovulation has occurred when the basal temperature rises from one day to the next, after the presence of the egg-white cervical mucous. From the male standpoint, conception can occur more readily if the sperm-count is high during this time, and intercourse is timed in two to three day increments. If you had sexual intercourse just prior to the woman's basal temperature increase, it would have been right at the point of ovulation, and getting pregnant is more than likely. However, pregnancy is also possible when intercourse was prior to ovulation and immediately following, as it is all a matter of the sperm meeting up with the egg once it reaches the fallopian tubes. While most sperm die upon contact with the vaginal secretions, the strongest ones can survive up to a few days, eventually uniting with the awaiting egg if successful.

It is also possible to have a non-ovulatory cycle, mistaking it for pregnancy. During a non-ovulatory cycle, an egg is not released, and a woman may or may not experience menstrual bleeding. If she does, it is often lighter, and not accompanied by menstrual cramps. A non-ovulatory cycle can happen periodically or regularly in some women when stress, a change in diet or exercise, drug use, onset of disease, or hormonal imbalances have occurred. Symptoms may or may not even be felt. If you may not be experiencing ovulation and getting pregnant is your goal, it is worth a consultation with your doctor to remedy, and increase your chances of conception.
