Basics for Parents 101

If you are currently expecting a baby, or will be adopting a child of any age for the first time, it is very common to have doubts as to being a good caregiver. And, if you have never had much interaction with children or youth up to this point, you likely lack confidence in handling situations that might arise. Fortunately, places such as hospitals, family planning centers, health clinics, churches, schools, childcare facilities, and libraries are all great resources for finding parenting information. Parent associations and support groups offer you encouragement, help, and feedback from experienced parents or peers who are also first-timers-to-be. You can also benefit from attending free or affordably-priced courses available in hospitals, to learn about bathing/diapering a baby, breastfeeding, administering first aid, administering infant massages, information about your unborn baby, handling and disciplining older children or teens, childbirthing. While reading or attending classes will arm you with an adequate supply of parenting information, parent expertise is best achieved through volunteering your time in assisting other parents or childcare providers handling children. Not only will that hands-on approach provide you with trial-and-error lessons, but you will also help ease any anxieties over being responsible for another human being.

However, planning in advance is crucial. It is never too early to obtain parenting information or parent advice for future reference. The more you know the better off you will be when your child arrives. Until then, just remember that children will not seek perfection, only your love and attention.
