What Kind of Parent Are You?

Parenting style and effects of your actions can influence the emotional development of your children. People tend to have different styles when it comes to raising children. Your idea of disciple may differ from your spouse's idea of the kinds of disciple you should use for your children. What kind of parent are you and what kind of parent would you like to be? Here are four examples of parenting styles and effects:

Indulgent Parents: More responsive than demanding. These parents tend to be nontraditional and lenient. They don't require mature behavior and are non-confrontational.

Authoritarian Parents: Highly demanding and directive, but not responsive. Tend to be obedience-and status-oriented. They expect their orders to be obeyed without question and provide a structured and organized environment with clearly stated rules.

Authoritative Parents: Both demanding and responsive. They are assertive but not restrictive and intrusive. Their disciplinary methods are supportive and they want their children be assertive, cooperative and socially responsible.

Uninvolved Parents: Low responsiveness and demanding ness. This parenting style may encompass both rejecting and neglecting in extreme cases. Most parents are just too busy a lot of the time, but fall within normal range.

The best way to create harmony in your household is for both parents to be on the "same page." Sit down and discuss parenting styles with your spouse. Create a balanced style of your own. Decide on a disciplinary action that you both can enforce. Also discuss structure and values you want taught in your home. When children experience a unified parental front, then they are more likely to learn the right principles and follow the rules.
