Parenting Styles: Past and Present

There have been many theories on parenting and child development over the years and these theories have impacted parenting styles significantly. The biggest theory has been the nature vs. nurture and parenting styles, past and present, reflect the theory that captures that particular generation the most. The nature argument is such that the child is simply a blank slate and can and will absorb what is taught and exemplified in his environment. Parents who believe in this theory, both past and present, believe children will learn from example and can be molded into any type of human being simply by providing the right environment. However, this is opposite the nurture theory.

Parenting styles past and present also include the nurture
theory. This theory has its basis in the fact that nurture is what shapes the child and its development. It claims environment is not a huge factor, but how the child is treated and nurtured is what leads to a well adjusted child and to who the child will ultimately become.Perhaps you are thinking of examples of both nature and nurture based parenting styles that resulted in children very different than what the style suggested would develop. This is true, and should make you aware that more often than not, parenting and child development is a mixture of both nature and nurture and the child's personality itself. Believe whatever theory you like, but always know there are a considerable number of variables that affect a child's development.
