Weight Gain During Pregnancy Depends on your Previous Size

Contrary to popular belief, not all women gain tons of weight once they become pregnant. Plus-size women tend to only gain 10-15 extra pounds, and skinnier women tend to gain the most because the body needs to overcompensate; the body produces
excess fat reserves to give the skinnier mom to be more stamina and energy during the physical labor itself. Pregnancy size by week thus varies according to original size, weight, and body shape. Women who are "pear-shaped" tend not to look pregnant, but women who are "apple-shaped" tend to appear more as though they are pregnant. Your pregnancy size by week can and should be charted by your OB-GYN doctor, and if you experience any drastic weight gain or loss you should tell them immediately. If you are underweight during your pregnancy, your baby may be born underweight.

In the case of larger women, sometimes they find it frustrating that their pregnancy doesn't "show" because they are naturally overjoyed with the news and want strangers and family members alike to both notice and share in the joy. They would like nothing more than to visibly be with child, but their body refuses to gain weight because it feels as though it is already at the proper size. However, as with underweight women, overweight pregnant women should be careful not to over do it, eating-wise. If you have problems with diabetes, you could be at risk of passing them on to your child. The important thing is to always keep your regular doctor appointments and to always let your OB-GYN know what's going on with you.
