Premature birth at 30 weeks
Risks Of A Baby Born At 30 Weeks
Every pregnant woman's fear is to go into premature labor. Effects of premature labor depend on how many weeks along a baby is when it is born. Babies born premature at 30 weeks have a high rate to have problems.
Several problems that a premature baby at 30 weeks may have include hyperbilirubinemia, apnea, and anemia. Hyperbilirubinemia is a condition where babies have a high level of bilirubin that can cause jaundice. During an apnea spell a baby may stop breathing, have a decrease in their heart rate, and turn purplish or blue. Most all babies born 30 weeks or earlier have some form of apnea spell. Anemia is a lack of red blood cells necessary for adequate oxygen supply to the body. Babies born premature at 30 weeks may also experience low blood pressure, respiratory distress syndrome, or infection. Low blood pressure may be caused by infection, blood loss, fluid loss, or medications giving to the mother before birth. Respiratory distress syndrome occurs when the baby's lungs are not working properly. Infections are common in premature babies, but can often be treated.
All premature babies have to have special treatment. They are unable to feed from the breast and have to be fed by a tube. It is always disheartening to see a baby hooked up to so many tubes and hoses. It is also not uncommon for a premature baby to be in an incubator for several days or weeks. These are all necessary until the baby can function on its own.
