Making The Old New Again by refinishing a crib

Refinishing a crib

Making The Old New Again

You are expecting a new little bundle of joy and have your very own baby crib sitting in the garage. You are considering refinishing a crib but wonder if this is a project you can handle. Well, of course it is!!

Make sure you start this project soon enough. It may take you several months to complete. Also be sure that any of the products you use are safe for pregnant people as well as babies.

Another consideration is the age and safety of the crib. Check to make sure that the crib meets the safety requirements for infants and toddlers.

You will need to dismantle the crib. Mark all the hardware so that you will be able to reconstruct the crib properly.

Next comes the sanding part of this project. You will need to sand every piece of the crib to remove the old finish.

After sanding take a piece of cheesecloth and wipe every surface you have sanded. If you do not so this, your stain will not go on evenly and the results will not be as pleasing.

Choose the color of stain for your crib. It is usually a good idea to try to choose a color that is similar to the stain previously used on the crib.

Stain each piece of the crib and seal with a good quality sealer. Let these pieces sit for at least 24 hours before applying the first coat of polyurethane. You should apply three coats of polyurethane and let each coat dry for at least 24 hours.

After applying the final coat of polyurethane let the pieces dry for a few days before reassembling the crib.

You now have an heirloom crib ready for your new baby!
