Smoking and Childbirth

Smoking and childbirth can be a very risky combination for the mother-to-be and her baby.It is estimated that about fourteen percent of all premature births are do to the mothers smoking. The two most damaging chemicals are carbon monoxide and nicotine, because they constrict the blood vessels and do not allow as much oxygen to get to the baby as needed.
If you are thinking about smoking and childbirth , quit. The risks to the mother are a possible uterine infection, the placenta not growing properly, and preterm labor. Babies born to smokers tend to have below average birth weights. These smaller babies get sick more often and can develope asthma and lung infections, or be born with their lungs not fully developed. There is a possibility of birth defects, and the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). There is even a chance of a miscarriage or stillbirth.

As they grow after birth they may always be smaller than other children, and may even have learning disorders or below average intellect. Some of these children will grow up with behavioral problems which can stay with them into adulthood.

Smoking and chilbirth can also hurt future generations. If mothers and/or fathers smoke, it is more likely that their children will develope the habit. When they choose to have children of their own, they will also be at risk for a possible lifetime of medical and emotional problems.

The bright side of all this is, is that more mothers are aware of the risks, and have quit smoking. Even quitting early in the pregnancy, gives mother and baby a better chance at a healthy, happy life.
