Spotting before ovulation

Female Reproductive Concerns

A healthy female reproductive system helps maintain the rest of the body. Any emotional or physical changes or the onset of an illness or disease, can all impact reproductive functions. The monthly cycle centers around the production and release of an egg from either of the ovaries, followed by the shedding of the uterine lining, known as menstruation. Oftentimes, any reproductive problems present themselves in the form abnormal vaginal bleeding, sometimes spotting before ovulation-before an egg is released-and at times other than when menstruation is due. While not an immediate cause for alarm, especially in spotting before ovulation, it is a good idea to keep track of the length, severity, and other symptoms you are experiencing before making a gynecological appointment.

Other bleeding causes include a recent internal exam, sexual intercourse, diet changes, or harmless luteal cysts. Such instances last between one and a few days. If it persists, or recurs, your doctor might reexamine you to determine if there are any underlying problems.

Spotting before ovulation is common in women of childbearing age. It can signify fertility, serve as your indicator in knowing when is ideal for family planning, or point to the presence of stress or the possibility of hormonal imbalances. In some women, it occurs monthly, and in others only on occasion.

With any abnormal vaginal bleeding, only when the flow is heavy, if you see blood clots, are dizzy or have extreme pain, or suspect pregnancy should you contact your doctor.
