Symptoms with ectopic pregnancies

What happens if you have an ectopic pregnancy?

An ectopic pregnancy is a condition in which the sperm has fertilized the ovum, but the ovum for some reason cannot make it into the womb, and instead remains in the fallopian tubes. Sometimes this is quite literally known as an "out of place pregnancy." Though relatively common (about 1 in 100 pregnancies begins this way), it is quite dangerous because if the baby begins to form in the tube instead of the womb, it can pose a serious threat to life of the mother, especially if it bursts the tube. Some symptoms with ectopic pregnancies can be difficult to decipher because they may not seem all that serious at first. Symptoms such as stomach pain, shoulder-tip pain and strange menstrual bleeding in which your period consists of a "prune-juice" like texture (that is, watery and thin rather than dark red from uterine lining) may not alarm you too much at first, but if you're of child bearing age and recently had unprotected sex, it is very important to
address these issues with your OB-GYN immediately. Your doctor will likely recognize these as symptoms with ectopic pregnancies, and you can decide how to proceed from there.

Your risk of having an ectopic pregnancy increases if you have ever experienced pelvis infection or appendicitis. If your fallopian tubes have been damaged or narrowed it's more likely that difficulties will occur. If you are indeed ectopic, surgery may need to be scheduled. Many women, especially those who really desire to start a family, are scared to try again after enduring such an ordea. If you wait at least 6 weeks after your next period, your chances for having and maintaining a "normal" pregnancy will be much higher next time.
