The great outdoors for you and your child

As your child grows and develops, their interest in the world around them also expands. Creating safe, fun, and interesting outdoor environments for infants and toddlers can be a project the whole family can work on.

When you begin creating outdoor environments for infants and toddlers safety should be your first and foremost consideration. A safe outdoor environment for infants and toddlers means it is one that has no toxic components and one that is designed with their needs and size in mind.

Make sure there is ample room for the toddler to run and express themselves. Just being outside is an adventure for your child as they feel the wind blow, the sun shine, and smell the flowers. Be sure that none of the shrubbery and flowers are poisonous though, as infants and toddlers frequently explore their world by putting things in their mouths.

Climbing equipment should include soft padding for landings to prevent injuries. Brightly colored equipment will induce their use. In addition, the entire outdoor environment for infants and toddlers should be securely fenced. A variety of surfaces should be available to enhance exploration. These surfaces can include sand, water, and grass. In addition, outdoor equipment that is designed for their size will encourage physical activity, such as climbing, which will enhance their coordination and physical development.

Infants and toddlers should be exposed to the outdoors as frequently as weather permits. Allowing the child to play freely outdoors can have a lasting positive impact on their cognitive, physical, and emotional development.
