The Importance and Safety Concerns of Winter Coats for Toddlers

Keeping your toddlers warm in the winter is a definite must in order to keep them safe and healthy. Baby Center offers several suggestions on how to keep your toddler warm on a cold winter's day. They begin by recommending that parents layer their toddler's clothing to help keep warm. Baby center also adds in addition to winter coats for your toddler, you should also make sure that your baby has warm socks, mittens, and a hat to keep warm. When taking your child outside in the winter, you will also want to monitor the amount of time that they are in the cold weather, and make sure to change articles of clothing if they become wet with snow.

Safety Concerns with Winter Coats

Still, there are safety concerns when it comes to bundling up your little ones during the winter. The safety issue that causes the most concern is that of the negative combination that big winter coats and car safety seats can make. Jen Ellis, a certified Child Passenger Safety, claims that heavy blankets and winter coats can cause a problem when places in under a car safety seat harness. Ellis claims that the thickness of winter coats or snow suits could "compress" enough, and allow toddlers to shift or even be ejected from the car seat. Ellis insists that parents check the winter coats for safety with car seats. You should be able to fit no more than two fingers in under the harness of the shoulder straps and collar bone of the child. If any more fingers can fit, the coat is allowing too much movement in the seat.
