The Importance of Parents Interacting with Infants

One of the important aspects of the development of a child is the parent infant interactions that occur in the early months and years of life. Vanessa Rasmussen claims that the interactions affect the formation of the child's personality, their behavior and even perhaps their academic achievements. Rasmussen claims that interaction between parents and baby may be the "most important factor" in child development and behavior.

Language is one of the most vital interactions that occur between parent and infant. Rasmussen discusses the use of baby talk, the words and grammar that parents often make up to speak with their baby. Often, these words and grammar are created to help the baby to say the words. That is how grandmother becomes mimaw and a pacifier becomes a binky. Still, Rasmussen insists that the baby talk should not continue for a long time into the baby's development as it could begin to hinder, not help the child's language learning.

All over the globe doctors are beginning to truly see the importance of parent-baby interactions. The UK offers what they call a PBIP or Parent-Baby Interaction Programme. This program lasts from birth to six weeks old. The goal of the program is to "facilitate the development of secure attachments." The program is also supposed to help parents become more aware of their baby's responses and increase the confidence of the parents to meet their child's needs. The study offers that parent-infant interaction improves both the development of the child and alleviates stress and promotes well-being in the parents.
