Toddler Who Stutters

Toddler Who Stutters

When children are learning to talk it can be hard to differentiate between s toddler who stutters and toddlers who are just trying to learn to speak. If a toddler hesitates often while speaking or has trouble talking he may have a problem with stuttering.

If a toddler has occasional problems with the repetition of syllables, the use of hesitancies and the use of fillers like "er," "uh" or "um" he may just be learning to use his language skills in different ways. This may not be a sign of a toddler who stutters.

Most toddlers will stop stuttering on their own. If the toddler continues to stutter and it becomes a problem you should speak to your doctor.

If you have a toddler who stutters there are several ways you can help. When you talk to your toddler, do so in a calm and slow manner and pause often. Make sure you set aside time every day so that you can give your toddler your undivided attention.

Let your child talk about anything he wants to rather than asking a lot of questions. Always let your toddler know you are listening when he speaks but keep the questions to a minimum.

Try to curb criticism, speak slowly and don't interrupt. This will decrease any anxious feeling your child has and allow him to feel comfortable when speaking.

Take turns when listening and talking. Make sure everyone in your family follows this rule. A toddler who stutters will find it easier to talk when they are not interrupted.

The best thing you can do for a toddler who stutters is to accept him just as he is. The support you give your toddler will help him overcome this obstacle in a positive way.
