What are some of the things to expect with emotional development in toddlers

Toddlers are defined as infants who have begun to walk. This stage of development usually encompasses infants between the ages of one to two years. Emotional development in toddlers is charged with change and growth.

One of the hallmarks of emotional development in toddlers is their need for independence. They want to do things for themselves, but are frequently lacking the skill to do so. This can lead to frustration in the toddler, which in turn leads to mood swings and misbehavior.

In addition, at this stage of emotional development in toddlers, the child views him/herself as the center of their world. All activities, needs, ideas, thoughts, etc. center on themselves and their needs, desires and wants. They are, for this reason, incapable of sharing or playing with others, although they will play beside another toddler.

Also, the child learns at this stage of emotional development to say, "No." This can be very disconcerting for parents and it is critical that the child learn his/her limits or boundaries from attentive caregivers.

Toddlers, at this stage of emotional development, are very curious about the world around them. They will enjoy time outside where they can explore nature. They will also enjoy helping with household chores and activities. The caregiver, however, must ensure that whatever the child is attempting is age-appropriate and has a high likelihood of success. Since, toddlers at this stage of emotional development are easily frustrated, the tasks given should be fairly simple.
